EC Safer Internet Programme and klicksafe

The internet and new online technologies continually present users with new options for information and communication. These innovations are accompanied by new risks, such as exposure to illegal or detrimental content, proliferation of viruses and dialers, harassment in chatrooms, or misuse of personal data. Where children and young people are concerned, it is particularly difficult to deal adequately with this rapid development. Competence in using the internet must be actively promoted if these risks are to be minimized and the opportunities of the internet employed to full advantage.

The FSM is actively involved in and supported by the Safer Internet plus Programme and the Safer Internet Programme set off by the European Commission in 2005 in order to deal with risks from the internet and promote important media skills.

Please visit the European Commission's website for detailled information about the current Safer Internet plus Programme.

At request of the European Commission, klicksafe is developing a national node in Germany to raise public awareness on the topic of internet safety. klicksafe provides thorough information on safety themes and is creating a network of existing initiatives in Germany which address questions of internet safety. The managing director of the FSM, Sabine Frank, is member of the klicksafe Advisory Board. Please visit www.klicksafe.de for further information.
